Most of us are already aware of some of the dangers of casual sex with complete strangers. You could be abducted. The sex could be horrible. He or she could be a psychopathic serial killer. You could contract gonorrhea. Etc, etc.

But what do you do when you show up at a stranger’s place expecting just to get off and go home, and the person who greets you isn’t at all what your internet exchange led you to expect?

This is a difficult ethical predicament, unless you are a completely cold-hearted asshole. Do you accuse the person of misleading you? Do you take a straightforward approach and just say “I’m not into it, bye”? Do you make up an excuse to leave before any physical interaction transpires? After more than three years on testosterone, on numerous occasions I’ve found myself in groups of straight guys standing around at a party or a bar with drinks in hand, talking about women. The anthropologist in me gets off on these awkward conversations about sex, primarily because the men involved often seem somewhat like acrobats on a tightrope – trying to simultaneously engage in a profoundly intimate dialogue and also establish complete sexual disinterest in each other.

“Hey man, so… are you an ass guy or a tits guy?” is the kind of inquiry that often starts off these conversations. It’s a classic homosocial icebreaker, after which we go around in a circle and each guy answers.
