Cuomo wants gay marriage bill passed in Senate before Father's Day

Governor Andrew Cuomo is determined to be the one who signs gay marriage into law in New York, and it sounds like he has given the State Senate a deadline to pass legislation that will give him the chance.

Cuomo is pushing for a vote in the State Senate, and he evidently wants it to happen before Father’s Day.

With less than three months in office, the governor isn’t holding anything back when it comes to lobbying Senators for a marriage equality bill in the Empire State.

Unlike his predecessor, David Paterson, Cuomo doesn’t just want a quick vote. Similar legislation failed to pass the Senate last year after Paterson forced the issue to a vote during a special session.  Cuomo doesn’t just want a vote, the Governor says he plans to secure the votes needed to pass the legislation and a bill signed into law that will allow LGBT couples in New York the same rights that straight couples have.

With the proper political plays, the bill looks like it could squeak through despite the fact that Republicans hold a small majority of the seats in New York’s Senate. Unlike other parts of the country, the number of politicos speaking out in favor of gay marriage seems to be much higher than those who oppose it. Additionally, those supporting marriage equality in New York seem to be more dedicated to changing the law than proponents are to preventing a bill from passing.

Charles On… 'The Justin Biebers of politics'

5
by on March 30, 2011 at 9:15 am

What has the world come to?  Instead of having intellectual talks on politics, the media is now referring to these three goons as ‘the Justin Biebers of politics.”

Evidently Scott Brown, Christine O’Donnell and Rand Paul have been branded as ‘Biebers’ for prematurely penning the life stories.  Brown and Paul each signed book deals with less than a session of service under their belts, and O’Donnell started telling her story without even winning the election.

They’re being compared to the 17-year-old singer who wrote his memoir at 16.

“The Justin Biebers of politics are the people running the show,” said longtime GOP strategist Alex Castellanos.

For their sake, I guess it’s a good thing that they’ve got the reigns.  Having already written their life stories, the tea baggers need make sure they develop the future to match what they’ve put on paper.

The next thing you know, we’ll be changing the law so Justin Bieber can just run himself.

Prepare for the allure of the iconic Joey Arias.

Everything sounds better with a “-tress” at the end (think Johnny Weir: he doesn’t have an agent, he has an “agentress”). If you work at a coffee-shop you can be a “coffeestress” instead of another coffee-shop girl. In reality, however, only a few deserve the honour. Joey Arias is one of the few: songstress, temptress, mistress (of ceremonies for Cirque du Soleil‘s Las Vegas show “Zumanity” for 6 years, a show for which Arias co-wrote 3 songs), actress (with appearances in 7 films) and cabaretress; chanteuse, fashion icon and fixture of the NYC downtown scene; Joey Arias is a rare bird of exotic, quasi Picassian beauty doted of a unique and powerful sensuality. Known the world over for a classy, yet comedic, very creative, slightly twisted and at times dark performance art, as well as for channeling Billy Holliday like no other, Arias has earned the status of Legend and the recognition of being a true avant-garde Artist (note the capitals).

On April 21st (Thursday), New York City will have the fascinating opportunity of experiencing Joey Arias in a one night only special performance. Inspired by leagues of renowned singers who have appeared on The Town Hall stage over its vast history, this reining seductive drag goddess will make a debut at the venue with an unforgettable evening of music, humor and a little bit of scandal – just what audiences have come to expect from an Arias’ performance. Conceived and created by Arias and musical director Ben Allison, and performed with Allison’s 4-piece band, the program will include Arias’ inimitable interpretations of jazz standards, along with new renditions of tunes made famous by Bob Dylan, Diana Ross and Cream, among others.

April 21st 20:00 – 23:00 at The Town Hall (123 West 43rd St. btw 6th Ave. & Broadway)

Presented by Josh Wood Productions in association with Earl Dax.
Tickets start at $29 and are available at Ticketmaster.

VIP tickets include best seating and a champagne toast with Joey.
A portion of the proceeds to benefit Lifebeat, Music Fights HIV.

Don’t forget to click ’attend’ on the Facebook event, and spread the word!

If you can’t wait, make sure to catch Joey Arias TONIGHT, Wednesday, at Vig 27 (119 E 27th St. btw Park Ave. South and Lex) at 9 p.m.

You can find Joey at Joeyarias.com and also on facebook.

'Dancing with the Stars' sends first couple home, Chris Brown takes the stage

by on March 30, 2011 at 6:14 am

The first results show of the season turned out to be somewhat of a snore on
Dancing with the Stars.

Chris Brown made his first live television appearance since losing his cool last week on the same network ultimately storming out shirtless and throwing a chair through a window on the set of Good Morning America.

ABC seemed perfectly fine with Brown performing on DWTS, despite  host Tom Bergeron’s public disapproval and statements in which he refuses to interview Brown.

His highly anticipated Dancing with the Stars debut was certainly laced with the possibility of music’s newest bad boy making an ass of himself again; however that wasn’t the case.

Brown performed three numbers “Yeah 3X”, a mashup of his hit “Forever” and his new song “Beautiful People.”  He even managed to get the crowd on their feet as he hammed it up by tumbling with his back up dancers.

He typically puts on a good show as long as no one rocks the boat and gets him pissed off.  When that happens, he seems to forget how much potential he has as an artist and transforms into a beast.  Chris was on his best behavior Tuesday night and really turned it out with a great Dancing with the Stars performance.

The audience also voted to get rid of the eye candy first this season.  Radio personality Psycho Mike Catherwood and his partner Lacey Schwimmer were the first couple to get the boot!
