Washington set to become 7th state with marriage equality
3It looks like Washington will be the seventh state to allow gay and lesbian couples marriage equality.
The legislation passed through both the House and the Senate riding right along party lines. A majority of Representatives in the House voted to legalize gay marriage by a vote of 55-43 on Wednesday night. The state Senate passed the same bill last week by a vote of 28-21.
Washington’s Governor Christine Gregoire, a Democrat, said she is looking forward to signing the legislation and “putting into law an end to an era of discrimination.”
Maryland and New Jersey are both also expected tosoon pass legistlation that will legalize same sex marriage in their respective states as well. Earlier this week, an appeals court deemed California’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. Gays could once again be getting married there in as little as two weeks.
Six states currently allow gay marriage. They are New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa. So does the District of Columbia.
