Christopher’s Corner: Madge still delivers!

Madonna has been a music icon for over three decades and throughout the years has given some of the most poignant, controversial, and beautiful performances on television ever. She was an MTV Video Music Awards staple when she first walked out on the stage in her infamous “Like A Virgin” performance. Rolling around in a wedding dress with such precision and finesse, anyone watching could tell this lady had something very special. She kept on delivering smashing performances, like 1990′s “Vogue,” in which she and her dancers donned Victorian era garb and danced provocatively. The Material Girl had one of the men go up her dress, fanned another dancer’s penis, and pushed two of them in her bosom.
When thinking about great Video Music Award performances, the preceding two come to mind. They really set the bar high and are always mentioned in VMA Anniversary shows. After last night’s performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, I predict the Queen of Pop will be mentioned as one of the greatest in Super Bowl History. She had it all: Roman soldiers, acrobats, cheerleaders, and a bitchin’ pair of boots! I had the biggest grin on my face, from ear-to-ear, for 12 whole minutes. I immediately went on Facebook to post that it was indeed the Best Halftime Show Ever! My sister texted me and told me it was brilliant.
But as I scrolled down my timeline, I saw a lot of disdain and not much love. Many people focused on the fact that she lip synched. Okay, so I agree Madonna never had the vocal pipes of Adele or Kelly Clarkson, who knocked the National Anthem out of the park, but she entertains. Plus, there are several artists I have seen in concert that I have paid money to see lip synch. Britney Spears did her fair share during the “Dream Within A Dream” tour and Janet Jackson has been known to mouth her words as well. But Madonna works hard at what she does and it always comes out a magical performance.
Many people were also bringing up the fact that she is too old. I do not know too many 53-year-old women who look as stunning as Madonna does or can pull off a performance like she did. She is in the best shape of her life and proved she can still kick the pop world’s butt. She was doing flips with her dancers and was just plain energetic from beginning to end. If Cher or Tina Turner can do what Madonna just pulled off, more power to them both!
The haters also do not realize that Madonna has paved the way for several pop princesses of today, including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry. Without Madge there would be none of them. She is what pop music is all about: excitement and exhilaration. Don’t hate, just give her all your luvin’!
