FASHION FOCUS: The Scarf
2
It goes back as far as Ancient Rome, at least
Used to wipe sweat, a sudarium it was called,
It serves many purposes,
It has traveled through time.
Adorning the necks of many along the sands
Ornamental, sentimental, fundamental….
The scarf is a garment that is perfectly suited for everyone. Women, men, children and even pets (sometimes) wear scarves. They are very individualistic because the owner decides what their scarf life will be. Sometimes they’d feel bulky and abrupt and other times it would be decorative and delicate. Colorful and thoughtful, warm and functional….. How many ways can one describe the scarf? I am overwhelmed with this topic because something as simple as a scarf is actually quite complex. In just one hour on a sunny afternoon I was able to shoot lots photos of people in various types of scarves. It was cool outside, not cold, which tells me that lots of these scarves were about fashion as well as function.
My scarf lay in wait
It wasn’t too cold for me
Everywhere I look. To the right, left and definitely in front of me
Necks adorned with unique visions of the perfect accessory
These different versions create visions
No two people affix their scarf identically
Every owner has a story about how they met their scarf…
Which brings to mind the scarf that my better half made for me during my “get to know him” visit to NYC. It is still the longest scarf that I own and of course it’s very sentimental. Whenever worn I think about that blizzard that hit the city the moment my plane touched down and me being unprepared for the snow….I recall how fast he whipped up this scarf that seemed to protect every inch of my face. Naturally I could go on and on about this scarf. The point is simply that for many people scarves hold a number of significant purposes. I bet you have a scarf story, don’t you? Are scarves just for warmth or would you consider yourself a scarf snob? You might even be the person who never leaves the house without a scarf around your neck and shoulders (raise your hand if that’s you. AND tell me more! Is your neck always cold?)
I’ve never been very huge on scarf life beyond knowing to choose great colors, good textures, and a choice that will not leave too many reminders in my beard! As far as prices go, I haven’t spent tons of money on scarves and I don’t think you have to spend lots of money to get a quality scarf. However, who’s to say that I wouldn’t? Maybe someday I’ll be able to drop dramatic coins on a scarf or two. I’m not ruling it out and/or blocking future blessings. Get into it.
For the value scarf enthusiast, your options are absolutely endless. They can be the simplest things to make. If you are the creative type and you have fabric around your place, all you have to do is cut yourself a scarf-sized piece and start wrapping. In the long run who will really know the difference? If you are adept at sewing and can reinforce your edges and “professionalize” your homemade scarf, by all means GO IN! J If you have lots of scarves like I do, mix and match them up and wear ‘em together! In fashion/inclement weather moments I sometimes wear 2 scarves at once. I mix colors, textures and lengths to create dimensional neck and face protection. I always say “why not?!” Please don’t think I assume to be the first, last, or ONLY person to do this. PLEASE! Everything has been done, in my opinion. It’s just my turn to give it a whirl!
But I digress…
If you are a shopper that needs the perfect scarf and are willing to spend lots of time searching for it, I do not disagree with you. If you will not rest until that Chanel piece is smartly draped across your shoulder, do what you must. We all have our passions and loves…hunt it down and wrap up in its perfection. If you have the money and you love it, “why not?!”

“Look How You Want To Feel”
You might just see it as a face shield
But I bet you care more than you think
But think about why you chose the colors you chose
Why is your scarf bulky and chunky?
Does that scarf even keep you warm?
I know you have one on, where is it?
Excuse me, where is your torso? All I can see is scarf and waist!
Well! Is that Hermes?
Nope, I got it from a vendor on 6th avenue
So how do you work your scarf life?
