“City Nights” boogies at ‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ BOWIE-ELVIS Birthday Bash’
0It sucks being fashionable in the dead of winter here in New York City. I’m one of those individuals who will suck it up when it’s thirty degrees out just so I could wear a polyester 70’s reject prom tuxedo. But, this is ridiculous. “Christ, these nipples could cut glass right now,” I spouted to the girl waiting in line behind me. The things we all do for a fabulous event and this one was well worth it. Sunday night saw Le Poisson Rouge invaded for Oh! You Pretty Things’ “BOWIE-ELVIS Birthday Bash” presented by Michael T, Benjamin Ickies, Shien Lee, Twig the Wonderkid, and Laura Rebel Angel. Woof! Yes, a lot of names came out to bring us this flawless event and that’s not counting the hosts, performers, artists, and attendees in general who all arrived dressed to the nines.
Back to my nips; I really need to learn my lesson and not show up on time. Screw homo-time, I want to see it all from start to finish. Kicking off the night, ultra-cute Eddie Clendening & The Blue Ribbon Boys from the Broadway hit “Million Dollar Quartet” performed more than their needed share (not complaining at all) of Presley numbers along with Rockabilly classics. It’s now shortly after 11:30. Where’s one of the girls I brought with me? Hmmm… already going for the goods on an unassuming male I see. Well played.
Notable guests in attendance included Astro Erle, Lauren Brown, Markko Donto, and Lee Chappell. Our hosts with the most included… deep breath: Matthew Herra C, Samuel Valentine, Miss Tiffany Leigh, Kristina Kiss, Eddie Black, and Pixie 007. (I’m spent already and need a cigarette) Vulcanus Levi brought us a dark fashion show; Miz Margo performed a beautiful dance number for us all dressed deliciously; while the burlesque portion was brought to us by The Flying Fox and Brewster. “Hey, you fucking pig,” I hear someone shout at me as I walk past a group of ladies who bash my martini glass, spilling half of it on the floor. What a tragedy! Oh, it’s Markko just saying hi to me as always. What a sweetheart. Special guests included Hickry Hawkins, Rachel Klein Theatre Ensemble, Rob Roth, Joe Starbolt, Lady Circus, and Bro Circus to name a few.
It’s not even midnight and so much has happened. My girl friend who came with me is now getting it in with some guy, I’ve been stepped on, screamed at, had my drink shoved into my gut… and I couldn’t be happier. Eric Schmalenberger sung us a few great songs with a surprisingly lovely voice. (We’re four martinis in so I’m trying to get all of this down. Just hang in there, please) Our DJs were Twig the Wonderkid, Rockin’ Daddy-O, and James David. Special appearances were made by Chip Cirrhosis, Christopher Morgan, Kyle Brincefield, and Hanna Ulrich all busting in after twelve and continuing the party with Herra C. (Is that my boss and editor, too? Time to look professional. “Hi, Demanda!”) Whether your style is Rockabilly, Glam, Rock N Roll, whatever… it didn’t matter that night. It was a great crowd with fanatical fashions, good drinks, small and big talk, and a plethora of music and shows that could get any crowd going ape-shit.
