Hot as the desert: Sahara Davenport. Watch her new music video here!
128Sahara Davenport, best know for her participation in season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has given NYC a few reasons to be proud of her. In the show she represented the NYC’s world of drag with style, pride and dignity, bringing even more attention to it, quickly becoming a favourite and showing to the world that she is a true lady (in fact, she was sent home for being too much of a lady!). Now she is starting a mainstream music career, and she is doing it in all the right ways: with a fresh, catchy song and a fun music video featuring outrageously handsome dancers (including Sahara’s boyfriend, Karl Westerberg, a.k.a. Manila Luzon, currently a favourite on season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race), bedeviling costumes and choreographic thrills.
Her first single, “Pump With Me,” was released by Gomination last November, followed by a promo video (Directed by Carlos Arias) on YouTube; quickly gaining popularity.
The official video for the song premiered on Wednesday and we have it here for your viewing and listening pleasures:
The video was shot last December with the help of Director Kalechi Noel and Sahara’s boyfriend in just one day. It may have been one of Sahara’s longest days as she was battling a fierce case of pneumonia (which she thought was the flu), which makes it all the more impressive. It was produced by Kaon Multimedia, styled by Omar Alexander and choreographed by Antoine Ashley and Antyon Smith. (Full credits on the YouTube video description).
The song was produced by Kazuhiko Gomi (DJ Gomi) of Gomination, who has produced or remixed songs for major artists including Madonna, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, and Cyndi Lauper.
You can buy it on eMusic, Amazon and iTunes. There are various versions and remixes available.
What’s next for Sahara? First, she is heading into the studio to record more danceable tracks for all of her fans (a.k.a. Saharables). She is also currently in rehearsals for a workshop performance of the show ‘Fairy Tale‘, an original musical by John Bronston and Joshua Robinson; a gay adaptation of ‘Sleeping Beauty‘, in which Sahara plays the evil queen (literally). It opens on April 21 at the LABA Theater (344 East 14th St., btw 1st and 2nd Aves.) Finally, she will head out on the road on a promo tour in May.
We wish Sahara the best on her music career. We are sure her energy, charisma, grace and beauty will bring the audiences to their feet. Not for nothing Michael Musto of The Village Voice suggested, “we need to bottle her and pass it around.”
