Obama says US will lift HIV travel ban [video]

Barack Obama said the United States will lift the HIV travel ban next year.  Don't go giving the President all of the credit yet.  This was actually something that was started by the Bush administration.

Obama said his crew will put the final touches on the plans early next week.

"If we want to be the global leader in combatting HIV/AIDS, we need to act like it," Obama said at the White House before signing a bill to extend the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program.

That program, started during the George HW Bush's presidency provides medical care, medication and support services to about half a million people who live with HIV and AIDS.

New York City's Halloween Musts

NIGHTLIFE| HALLOWEEN MUSTS

Halloween in New York City is a big deal, but Halloween 2009 is shaping up to be one of the most talked about in years.

Every year, Halloween is a great time for gay guys to dress up as women or to show off some skin.  This year we're also expecting to see lots of pop culture costumes from "Real Housewives" to the Obamas and iPods.

This year's hot spots include a pre-party with three of the biggest names on the turn tables, the infamous West Village Halloween parade and a wicked fantasy inside one of Manhattan's most legendary establishments.

This is where the GaySocialites will be this Halloween...

Friday, October 30th:

On Friday, the GaySocialites will be infiltrating Peter Rauhofer's Work party themed "Blood on the Dance Floor."  This night might be a bit more dramatic than usual.  We're expecting Rauhofer to create some 'blood on the dance floor' with Offer Nissim, his former partner-in-crime.  We're told Peter and Offer on the 'outs' paving the way for DJ Paulo to take the tables.

"Blood on the Dancer Floor" will be held at Roseland (239 West 52nd Street).  Cover varies.

Saturday, October 31st:

A must of everyone in Manhattan is the 33rd annual Village Halloween Parade.  This year the festivities begin at 4:30pm, and you'll be shocked at how this party takes over the streets of the West Village!  The ghouls and ghosts will work their way down Sixth Avenue stopping to greet on-lookers, kiddies and reporters along the way.  If you can't handle the maddness, NY-1 broadcasts the parade annually.  The best part about this one is that its free!

Later that night, we're joining forces with Dina Delicious, Daniel Nardicio, King Ralphy, Kevin Clamato, Jane Leachy, Yuhua, Chris Ryan and more to bring you "The Demented Circus: A Halloween Fantasy" at the legendary Lucky Chengs.  If you've ever been to Cheng's in the East Village, you know that the building itself is perfect for a haunted house.  Imagine what happens when you add in hundreds of hot guys looking for Dina and Daniel's adult fun!  It's going to be insane!

"The Demented Circus: A Halloween Fantasy" at Lucky Cheng's (24 First Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets).  Doors open at 9pm.  Cover Varies.

Have a Happy Halloween!

Who won the daytime Halloween costume war? [video]

rachel_ray_rosie.jpg

Each Halloween all of the day time talk show hosts dress up in costume and battle it out. This year Rachel Ray went for a "Wizard of Oz" theme with Rosie O'Donnell as Glenda, the good witch. Wendy Williams dressed as Dolly Parton, the women of "The View" dressed as Vampires and the "Today Show" cast went with a Star Wars theme for their Halloween costumes.

This year, however, the highest honors of Best Halloween Costume on daytime TV goes to... Regis and Kelly!  The duo had at least two dozen costume changes that included Regis and Kelly dressed up a Jon and Kate Gosselin, Lady Gaga, Susan Boyle, Michael Jackson, Real Housewives of New Jersey, Survivor, Beyonce's "Single Ladies", Dancing with the Stars, The Biggest Loser and The Bachelor.  Kelly Ripa even did a "Thriller" tribute to Michael Jackson.  Here's the video of that one:

The "Today Show" gets an honorable mention for their Star Wars costumes, and "The View" gets a HUGE thumbs down for their lame-ass Vampire costumes. I expected so much more from them and Wendy Williams (even though I do love Dolly Parton!)

Happy Halloween everyone!  I hope to see you at Lucky Cheng's in New York City tomorrow night as I co-host "The Demented Circus" with Manhattan's nightlife elite.

First photo of Chaz Bono - the man!

chaz_bono_man_photos.jpgHere it is!  The first photo of Chaz Bono as a man.  Sonny and Cher's little girl is now a big boy, and he barely even had to change his name.  Chaz was already his nickname when he was known as Chastity.

How did all of this come about? Chaz has known for a long time he was meant to be a man even though he was born a woman.  So, he decided to have a sex change for his 40th birthday.

The first photos were released today after the first stage of the change.

Chaz doesn't look that much different, just a little bigger.  Maybe he'll get another spot on "Celebrity Fit Club."

Bono's father, Sonny, turned from singer to conservative Congressman and voted against gay marriage before he died.  Chaz's mother, Cher, has publicly supported his decision.

Theatre Review: "Brighton Beach Memoirs"

by Jonathan Warman

I’ve never been much of a fan of Neil Simon’s work, so I haven’t made much of an effort to get to know Brighton Beach Memoirs or its companion plays Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound in the twentysomething years they’ve been around. Yes, I know that they are regularly praised as his best work, as the plays in which he successfully goes beyond his sitcom-y reputation (without turning his back on it). These reports piqued my interest, but never quite enough to read them or see regional productions.

So I came to this production with moderately low expectations, and was moderately pleasantly surprised. This semi-autobiographical play focuses on young Jewish teen Eugene Morris Jerome (loosely based on Simon himself) and his extended family living in a crowded home in late `30s Brighton Beach.

Brighton Beach Memoirs still trades somewhat on formulas that have success on television, but more in the direction of good soap opera than situation comedy. It is very tightly plotted, and Simon deftly builds suspense. There are still the expected one-liners (including one tasteless and mean one at the expense of a fat gay kid).

Director David Cromer has given us a production that is miles more grounded and humane than any other Simon play I’ve seen. The cast is uniformly strong, although I’d definitely single out Laurie Metcalf and Dennis Boutsikaris as Mama Kate Jerome and Papa Jack Jerome—these characters are the heart of the show and Metcalf and Boutsikaris’s performance are unsentimentally full-hearted.

Brighton Beach Memoirs will be playing in repertory with Broadway Bound, generally agreed to be the best play in the trilogy that Memoirs opens. For possibly the first time ever, I’m actually looking forward to seeing a Neil Simon play.

New Jersey candidate uses impersonators to mimick opponents [video]

SHOT OF THE DAY

Today's shot of the day is from the highly contested New Jersey Governor's race.  Third party candidate, Christopher Daggett, is running advertisements like this one in which he uses impersonators who look like his opponents to make his point.

In this commercial, impersonators acting like Icumbent Jon Corzine and Republican challenger Chris Christie holding up New Jersey families.  Of course, Daggett leads them to the top and bails out his opponents.

The race is tight in Jersey, but it doesn't look good for Daggett.  Corzine and Christie are in a race that is neck-and-neck.  GaySocialites.com has endorsed Corzine in this race.  He currently leads the polls by a slight margin.

Democrats reach agreement on health care bill

The Democrats in the House of Representatives have finally reached an agreement on a health care plan that will extend coverage to tens of millions who lack coverage.

Speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi says the new measure "covers 96 percent of all Americans, and it puts affordable coverage in reach for millions of uninsured and underinsured families, lowering health care costs for all of us."

The new bill will also evidently impose new restrictions on private insurers and create a government-run insurance option for cost-conscious consumers.  Democrats did not immediately release a detailed estimate of the legislation's cost, but the full House is expected to vote on the bill next week.

Barack Obama also seems set to put his stamp of approval on the new health care bill.

Jay Leno to reveal Chelsea Handler's Playboy cover on tonight's show

chelsea_handler_playboy_leno.jpgTwo late night hosts will collide tonight when Jay Leno welcomes Chelsea Handler to his new 10 o'clock show.

The episode was taped earlier today, and Leno revealed Handler's Playboy cover for the first time.  Chelsea said it was even her first time seeing it.

She wouldn't tell Jay whether she is fully naked inside, but she did state the obvious: "I'm not naked on the cover."

The December issue of Playboy does feature Ms. Handler in a skimpy bikini on the cover with a candy cane pulling down her bottoms.  You can see the whole cover after the break.

"The Jay Leno Show" airs tonight at 10/9c on NBC.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS

I'm sure every New Yorker has been into a Ricky's at some point, and most of us have even waited on line to get into the store in the final days before Halloween.  This year, Ricky's has taken old store fronts in and around New York to pop up temporary Halloween stores.

You can pick up your crazy colored hair sprays, vampire teeth, wigs, boxed costumes and all the make-up you need.

Reps from Ricky's also tells NY-1 that they've created at least 1,000 jobs for the Halloween season.

Senator Chuck Schumer says we "must not rest" until gay marriage in legal in all 50 states

Senator Charles Schumer told gay marriage supporters last week that we "must not rest" until it is legalized in all 50 states.  The third ranking member of the Senate made these comments as Maine prepares for Tuesday's vote to decide the future of marriage equality in their state.

If Proposition 1 passes it will overturn a new state law that legalized same-sex marriage in Maine. But if it fails it will be the first time that any state approves gay marriage through a state-wide vote.

"Ten years ago, many thought that civil unions were about the best we could hope for. But the time for marriage has come," Schumer, speaking at the Empire State Pride Agenda dinner, said. "I call on all of my colleagues -- Democrat and Republican, in the Congress, in the state senate, in the state legislature, to support full marriage equality now.... Equality should know no bounds, and we must not rest until we have [gay] marriage in all 50 of these United States."

Schumer is the senior U.S. Senator representing New York.  New Yorker's state legislature has approved a measure to legalize gay marriage, and the Senate is expected to pass the bill later this year in a special session.

Shot of the Day: Transgender lady maces kids on subway [video]

SHOT OF THE DAY

Our shot of the day comes from the subway where some kids got maced by a transexual on a train.  It sounds like a horrible story, but the boys were teasing the big tranny (the day before her birthday!)

The lesson here:  don't mess with the tranny!  Those girls go through a lot of torture, and they're likely to have a can of mace in their pocket.

I also wonder why the adult in this situation didn't tell Bebe's kids to shut the hell up.  Stupid adults make stupid children, I guess.

At least the transsexual looks good.  Those poor fat kids will probably be ugly for the rest of their lives!   We're clearly on Team Tranny here!

Barack Obama signs Matthew Shepard Act into law [video]

Barack Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crime Prevention Act into law today.  The measure was passed by both the House and the Senate this year.

"After more than a decade of opposition and delay, we've passed inclusive hate crimes legislation to help protect our citizens from violence based on what they look like, who they love, how they pray, or who they are," Presidnet Obama said.

I promised Judy Shepard, when she saw me in the Oval Office, that this day would come, and I'm glad that she and her husband Dennis could join us for this event.

Judy is, of course, the mother of the late-Matthew Shepard who was brutually killed in a gay bashing.

Attorney General Eric Holder, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Judy Shepard, Ted Kennedy's widow Vicki, Vice-President Joe Biden, Sen. Carl Lein, Sen. Patrick Leahy, and Rep. Jerry Nadler were all by Obama's sign as he signed the bill into law.

Larry Johnson suspended over homophobic slur on Twitter

Stupid bitch Larry Johnson has been suspended for week 10 of the NFL season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after making a homophobic slur on Twitter.

The Kansas City Chief's player went to his Twitter to bitch about another loss and bash his head coach Todd Haley.  When one of his followers responded, Johnson told him "Christopher Street boy. Is what us east coast cats call u."

Johnson was, of course, referring to the gayest street in the land in New York City's West Village.

This Twitter gay bashing was just the icing on the case.  Johnson has a long line of violations including assaults on various women.  It looks like we have another Michael Vick on our hands!

GaySocialites.com endorses Jon Corzine for Governor in New Jersey

POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT

If you live anywhere near New Jersey, you know that there is a heated race for Governor going on in the Garden State.  The airwaves are flooded with ads and even President Obama has been to Jersey to stump for the incumbent Jon Corzine.

You might think it seems like an easy win for Corzine, the Democrat; but Republican Chris Christie is giving him a run for his money.

However, for the LGBT community, the choice should be clear.  Jon Corzine is a pioneer for gay rights, and the governor has promised to sign gay marriage into law in New Jersey within the next year.

On November 3rd, go to the polls and vote for Jon Corzine for governor; because a vote for Corzine is a vote for equality.

GaySocialites.com endorses Dawn Zimmer for Hoboken mayor

POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT

On November 3rd residents in Hoboken, New Jersey will go back to the polls to once again select a Mayor. This will be the third time this year.

The first two trips to the voting booths resulted in the election of Peter Cammarano after he narrowly defeated Dawn Zimmer in a run-off election.

Over the summer, newly-elected Mayor Cammarano was arrested as a part of a sting to take down corrupt religious leaders and politicians.  After he was released from the clink and resigned from office, the Hoboken City Council President was primed to take over the Mayor's office.  Ironically, Zimmer held that post and was sworn in as acting Mayor of Hoboken.

In Tuesday's special election, Zimmer is hoping to hold onto the Mayor's office.  We hope she does too.

Zimmer has offered a fresh, grassroots approach to governing Hoboken's highly populated one square mile.  She has reinstated a sense of trust in the mayor's office and hit the ground running with only a few months in office.

Last Spring, Zimmer's campaign told GaySocialites.com exclusively that she supports legislation to legalize gay marriage in New Jersey.

GaySocialites.com endorses Dawn Zimmer for her unwavering leadership, dedication to the LGBT community and strength in tough times. We encourage Hoboken residents to keep Zimmer as their mayor on Tuesday.

Larry Johnson apologizes for anti-gay slur. Is it enough?

STUPID BITCHES CLUB

We hope to have the archives up soon so you can see the other members, but this is our first induction into the Stupid Bitches Club (SBC) as an Online Magazine.  The honor goes to Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson.

Johnson evidently used the slur during an exchange with one of his Twitter followers. A day later, he used it again as he brushed off reporters and told them he would not comment.

Now he's been told to stay away from his team while the NFL investigates.  Even though Johnson apologized, gay rights advocates want him let go.

Johnson is no stranger to controversy.  Last spring, a court ruled that the Chiefs could release the running back and not owe him $3.5 million in guaranteed money because he had violated contract conditions by pleading guilty to disturbing the peace in another incident.

"I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate," he said through a spokesman. "I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said."

Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, called on the NFL and the Chiefs to take disciplinary action and seize a chance to educate "on the dangers of homophobia in sports."

Barrios said he accepted Johnson's apology.  What about you?

GaySocialites.com endorses NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg for re-election

POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT

One week from today, on November 3rd, New Yorkers will go to the polls to decide between Incumbent Mike Bloomberg and his Democratic challenger Bill Thompson.  GaySocialites.com is proud to put our support behind Republican incumbent Mike Bloomberg.

When Democratic Governor David Paterson announced legislation that would legalize gay marriage in New York, Mayor Bloomberg was right by his side.  Mike has always been a friend to the gays, and he has always pushed for equality for our community.

Additionally, Bloomberg has worked hard to improve the middle class, fight off a recession for New Yorkers and has done a lot for small businesses and freelancers working in our city.

Even though the mayor doesn't sugar coat anything and isn't the most media savvy, he has maintained control of the city and remained confident even in times of uncertainty.  Bloomberg's dedication shows in the fact that he only accepts a one dollar salary from the City annually.

On November 3rd, GaySocialites.com encourages you to make the right choice and re-elect Michael Bloomberg as Mayor. Bill Thompson is the wrong man for the job, whether he's a Democrat or not!

The "Watch What Happens: Flipping Out Reunion" airs tonight on Bravo, and we'll finally get to see if Jeff Lewis can put the past behind and move on or if he'll kick his business partner and former lover, Ryan, to the curb.

As you can imagine, this episode of "Flipping Out" gets pretty dramatic as Jeff and Ryan go at it on national television.  Host, Andy Cohen, says this is the first time Jeff and Ryan have come in contact since the last season of "Flipping Out" wrapped.

During tonight's reunion special, Jeff says he's been "a weak, emotional little bitch" over the past few months because of his issues with Ryan and that he feels like he's going through menopause!

Let's see if these two can work it out.  "Flipping Out" airs Tuesday night at 10/9c on Bravo.

TONIGHT ON TV

On tonight's douche bag hour "Million Dollar Listing"; Chad and Madison are each invited to speak at a real estate conference in Arizona, and both diva boys are bratty when they find out their sharing the stage.

The drama, of course, doesn't end for Chad.  An agent brings him an offer that's way below listing price, but he somehow winds up playing hardball to get a reasonable deal.

Drag deviant Shealita Babay weighs in on gay marriage debate

THE GOSPEL OF SHEALITA

My name is Shealita Baby, and I am a devote Christian Baptist Evangelicalist! I speak the truth and virtue of the Lord King Jesus.

I would first like to thank King Ralphy, Charles Winters and all the other Faggots at GaySocialites.com for giving me the time to write this letter to talk with you and share with you the other side of the argument.

For those of you homos out there that have been too busy out there doing a mixture of cocaine, poppers, and drinking Zima’s at the local disco, there’s a Same Sex Marriage fiasco going on in this country.

I, for one, am totally against this notion of a man having the right to marry another man, and visa versa. It is this kind of thinking that is destroying this fine Christian Nation we call The United States of America were Jesus Christ resides.

If you give the homosexuals the right to marry; what next?! The only thing to come out of gay marriage is  that the ability to marry your dog, or cat, or maybe even horse with his 15 inches of Clydesdale glory will be legal! Then it will be that the damn pedophiles want their rights to sniff  bike seats and cruise playgrounds. This kind of thinking has got to stop!

We do not need this sort of embarrassing gay fag marriage debockle going on in our great country. Last time we decided to change things up a bit, the white man lost his right to the front seat of the bus and was forced to share a bathroom with a person of color!

This is was ridiculous cause everyone knows that the colored mans bowel movements destroy the toilet bowl, all them collard greens and fried chicken skins are deadly enough to rupture the septic tank.

We need to get America back on track and in the White Direction! Hallelujah! Go in the name of Christ and spread his love..but just not that nasty faggot buttcheek poundin kind of love.

With Love and Compassion,

Shealita Baby, Lady of the Lord

New York's 98.7 Kiss FM offends gays with homophobic commercial

CALL TO ACTION

There's a major call to action going on among tweeters in New York and nationwide.  GaySocialites.com Associate Editor King Ralphy, DJ Samantha Ronson and others are drawing awareness for an anti-gay marriage ad running on KISS FM 98.7.

The ad has also infiltrated other markets where local government is currently working to legalize gay marriage.  LGBT advocates want your to call the station and express your concern for this hate laced advertisement.

You can hear that horrible, homophobic commercial above.

Please take a moment to call 98.7 and tell them to stop running this discriminatory ad. Their number is 212-242-9870. As an R&B station that caters to a minority, you would think those folks might understand how it feels to be discriminated against better than anyone.

Another gay bashing ignored by NYPD?

nicho_gay_bashing.jpgBREAKING NEWS

GaySocialites.com has learned that the New York City Police Department has neglected to report yet another gay bashing in Manhattan.

New York nightlife personality Nicho Mendez says he was traveling with two friends when they were attacked by a group of thugs bellowing homophobic slurs.

Mendez says it all started when one of the men asked him for a cigarette.  "I said 'we don't have any hun,'" Nicho wrote in a Facebook note to friends.

That's where the story spirals out of control.  Mendez says the man called him a fag and started pushing him.  He then says his friend, Johnny Robovsky, came to defend him and eventually chased after Nicho's attacker.

From there, things got worse.  Mendez says his attacker returned with two other men who also assaulted him.  He also says those same men kicked another friend, Amanda Mills, in the stomach.

The cops didn't even fill out a police report to document the incident (other than Johnny's ticket..)!

Meawhile, Mendez has lacerations on his face at the cost of some low-life haters.  The attackers evidently lied to the cops saying they too were gay, so the cops let them go.

Mendez had to reach out to a detective in that precinct for assistance. Things seem to be looking up for Nicho's case, but they'll probably never track down the gay bashers.

Looks like Levi Johnston will go full monty for Playgirl spread

Sarah Palin's would-be son-in-law is getting ready to pose nude for Playgirl.  Rumor has it Levi Johnston will make upward of $25,000, and he'll likely show his penis. Who knew it could be so lucrative to knock up the Governor's daughter?!

Levi's sidekick, Tank Jones, confirmed to Gawker that the Playgirl contract has been signed and that the shoot will take place in the next couple of weeks in New York.

Jones added that Levi is "fearless" and he'll "do what he wants to do" and that he's "90% sure there will be nudity...I'm talking the front. Letting the whole thing hang out."

I can't wait!  I think Levi Johnston is totally redneck-chic. I'd do him. I don't think I'd let him knock me up, but I'd definitely be down for full frontal - especially in person!

Johnston is, of course, the baby daddy to Bristol - Sarah Palin's daughter.

The portrait was released by the White House on Friday, and the first thing I noticed was that the family dog was left out.  Where the hell is Bo?!

Bo's arrival as first family dog has sadly been one of the most talked about campaign promises on the Obama campaign, so you'd naturally think Bo would be included.

Fred Phelps and his hate mongers are coming to northern New Jersey

LGBT LOCAL NEWS

The crazies are coming to northern New Jersey.  Fred Phelps and his looney followers from Westboro Baptist Church are traveling all the way from the mid-west to protest in Hoboken, Seacaus and Jersey City.

Phelps and his followers believe that "God hates gays", they thank the Lord for 9/11 and they love to spread hate.

They're coming to Jersey to show their disapproval for 44 political and religious leaders arrested in July.

I think we should just ignore them, but if you want to counter the Phelps clan here's their schedule [via Hoboken411]:

Tuesday, October 27th from 4:45 to 5:15 pm they'll protest at Hoboken City Hall before moving on to the United Synagogue of Hoboken to spread more hate from 7 to 7:30 pm. Newly elected Mayor Peter Cammarano was replaced by City Council President Dawn Zimmer as a part of those raids.

Wednesday, October 28th they'll protest outside the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus at 10:15 a.m. because Secaucus mayor Dennis Elwell was among those arrested.

Later that day, Phelps and his freaks will protest at Dickinson High School in Jersey City.  They'll swing by there just before 3pm.

Theatre Review: "Memphis"

by Jonathan Warman

I love this show! Another show that Memphis director Christopher Ashley directed, All Shook Up, featured the early Elvis Presley song “That’s All Right.” That song is deceptively simple, but Ashley’s staging of it mined all of its implications, most vividly the racial tensions that lay under the success of Elvis, “the white man who sang like a black man.”

In Memphis everything that was implicit in that riveting moment becomes electrifyingly, grippingly explicit. In July 1954, a Memphis DJ named Dewey Phillips was the first DJ to broadcast “That’s All Right” the young Elvis Presley's first commercially released record. Memphis fictionalizes Phillips into the character of Huey Calhoun, who defies the racism of Memphis to express his love of rhythm and blues --- and not coincidentally his love for beautiful, black rhythm and blues singer Felicia.

Everybody here is working at the very top of their game. Ashley, best know for his gifts at staging comedy, proves he can be even more compelling and engaging (and entertaining) when dealing with dead serious themes like racism and the fear of success. David Bryan’s music, while it is more ‘60s rock & soul than ‘50s r&b, is miles more sophisticated than his work on The Toxic Avenger or anything he did with Bon Jovi.

Joe DiPietro’s book is inspirational, heart wrenching and devastatingly smart --- sometimes all in the same moment. Chad Kimball kicks ass as Huey, and Montego Glover positively glows as Felicia. If I were to pick one performance out of the stellar supporting cast, it would be Derrick Baskin as Gator, arguably the show’s wounded but joyous soul.

Of course it’s not perfect: Ken Travis’s sound design frequently obscures the vocals, rendering a fair portion of the lyrics unintelligible. What lyrics I can make out are of a piece with DiPietro’s wonderful book, so I really do miss hearing them. Nonetheless, if somebody were to ask me what the Broadway musical at its very best is capable of accomplishing, I would give Memphis as a prime example.

Theatre Review: "After Miss Julie"

by Jonathan Warman

While I like a lot of plays by Swedish playwright August Strindberg, I really don’t have much use for his play Miss Julie. It focuses on the fallout from a one night stand by the titular young woman of the landed gentry and her father’s footman Jean. It may have been groundbreaking in its frank dealings with sex and class in 1888, but it just seems mean, slow and overwrought now.

Patrick Marber’s adaptation After Miss Julie transposes the play to an English country house on the eve of the Labour Party’s historic landslide in 1945.  He does Strindberg’s original a few favors, taking the edges off of Jean’s misogyny, and making Julie herself a touch more sympathetic. Still, this is mostly the same Miss Julie that has always bored my pants off, and while director Mark Brokaw’s production has its virtues, I still don’t really give a damn about these characters.

For what its worth, this version is well acted. Sienna Miller has the right caged heat for poor little rich girl Julie, Marin Ireland has the spine of iron that the role of Jean’s fiancée Christina (my favorite part in the show) requires, and Jonny Lee Miller is all tightly controlled, brooding sex as Jean.

For the most part, Brokaw keeps things in motion, with the exception of a handful of long silences that I suppose are intended to be filled with tension and suspense --- but just weren’t. But I have such a strong prejudice against the original play (which this did nothing to change) that I suggest you seek out the opinions of other critics.

New York Governor says he expects gay marriage to pass in coming weeks

GAY MARRIAGE

david_paterson_empire_gay.jpg

New York Governor David Paterson says he expects to soon see a same-sex marriage bill on his desk, and he says he'll sign it into law.

Paterson says he expects the state Senate to give the measure final legislative approval in the coming weeks making New York the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage.

Paterson's statements to the Empire State Pride Agenda dinner in Manhattan on Thursday night brings to light a lot of behind-the-scenes work by advocates and bill sponsors trying to get the bill passed.

The bill should have already passed but was blocked by a coup that disrupted the end of the Senate's regular session this summer. Governor Paterson says he plans to put the bill on the agenda for a special session in the coming weeks. The Assembly already passed the measure.

Matthew Shepard Act passes, its in Obama's hands now

BREAKING NEWS

The Matthew Shepard Act passed through the Senate today, and now it is up to Barack Obama to make it a law.  The bill will add much needed hate crime protection to gays and lesbians across the country.

Democratic supporters attached the measure to a must-pass $680 billion defense policy bill the Senate approved 68-29. The House passed the defense bill earlier this month.

This was a top priority for late-Senator Edward M. Kennedy.  The measure is named for Matthew Shepard , the gay Wyoming college student murdered 11 years ago.  His mother, Judy, lobbied hard for the bill.  We can't thank her enough!

Cabaret Review: "Victoria Clark and Ted Sperling"

by Jonathan Warman

Seeing how she won a Tony Award for her turn in Light in the Piazza, Victoria Clark would be perfectly within her rights to go the Broadway diva route and create a cabaret act that was all about her. It’s very refreshing, then, that her debut Feinstein’s engagement is called “The Vicki & Ted Show” and is equally split between her and her old friend --- and star Broadway music director --- Ted Sperling.

This isn’t technically the premiere of this show: it had an acclaimed run at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater in Washington DC. It celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of their remarkable friendship that began when they were students at Yale University. Since then they have, separately and together, been involved with many hit  Broadway shows, including How to Succeed in Business..., Titanic and The Light in the Piazza (Ted also won a Tony for that show, by the way, for his sumptuous orchestrations).

They both are deeply musical people who, when they began their careers, had classical music ambitions. That makes for musically rewarding show that includes terrific songs from the likes of Sondheim, Berlin and John Pizzarelli & Jessica Molasky (one of several songs written especially for Clark).

The good news is that Sperling is a terrific singer, if not quite in Victoria’s opera-worthy league. As well sung as it is, the act could definitely benefit visually from a director’s touch: Sperling is often hidden from sight by his sheet music (even when he’s singing!) and Clark often delivers stuff to him that would been more effectively delivered to the audience. Still, when Victoria sings such sweeping songs as “In Buddy’s Eyes” and “Fable” from Piazza to Teds equally grand arrangement, this is pretty hard to resist.

Are you suffering from drunkorexia?

My classmates and I at the University of Tennessee would have considered this too much like work, but college kids these days are drunkorexic.

Here's how it works.  You basically don't eat, then you go out and drink.

"An epidemic like this is really bad. As RAs we're trained to deal with people who have eating disorders as well as how to help people who drink to an excess. This is a detriment since it would be nearly impossible to help someone who significantly suffered from both of these illnesses. This is a serious problem," Madison Shelton, second-year RA and a senior majoring in anthropology, said.

On an empty stomach, its easier to get drunk.

Is Suze Orman going to gay-up "Good Morning America"?

If power lesbian Suze Orman has her way, she might gay-up "Good Morning America" a little more.  Evidently Sam Champion and Robin Roberts are both out behind-the-scenes, so adding Orman will make it a gay trio.

Diane Sawyer is ending her 10-year run on "GMA" to replace Charles Gibson as the second female to take solo the evening news behind Katie Couric on CBS.

According to Queerty.com, Orman has officially thrown her name into the hat for the job.  The problem is that ABC wants to go back to a male-female format by replacing Sawyer with a man.

"A short list of candidates," says the Los Angeles Matea Gold, "is widely believed to include "This Week" anchor George Stephanopoulos, "World News Saturday" anchor David Muir, "GMA Weekend" co-host Bill Weir and GMA news anchor Chris Cuomo."

Gibson is retiring to spend more time with his family.

Ok, so it wasn't really hot-and-heavy; and Westwick's character isn't going gay.  Chuck Bass isn't even on the bi-now-gay-later program.  It was all a plan thought up by his girlfriend.

Leave it to the girls to give us all the man-on-man action.  Now that we've seen Westwick's gay Chuck Bass, when do we get to see him making out with former real-life boyfriend, Chace Crawford?

"Real Housewives of New York" star Bethenny Frankel is pregnant!

She may be leaving "The Real Housewives" franchise for her own spin-off, but it looks like Bethenny Frankel is ready to enter the real life of a housewife.  The reality star has revealed that she is pregnant, expecting her first child with new fiance Jason Hoppy.

Bethenny broke the news via her Twitter page and spoke exclusively to People.com.

"It's premature to be telling people this," Frankel said nearly in tears.  Someone evidently broke her cover by blabbing to celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton.

"It's not like, 'Did I Get Botox?' It's not the way I wanted it to get out," she says. "I haven't even gone through my first trimester. We haven't even heard the heartbeat. My [fiancé's] parents didn't even know."

Over the past few days, Bethenny has evidently been hanging with fellow reality star Dennis Richards and the "Insider" host Laura Spencer.  They've been helping her cope.

Tonight's Inner Beauty Parlor Event wants to teach you Gerrification

NIGHTLIFE

If you're looking for something off the beaten path tonight, then might I recommend the Inner Beauty Parlor event where nightlife reporter and personality Gerry Visco is teaching Gerrification.

The Gerrification project is "me Gerrifying NYC and the world, opposing rampant Gentrification, boringness, and yuppie-ville," says Visco.

She says she'll provide all of the attendees with a wig and a pair of her signature white sunglasses so they can feel the Gerry glam while prancing around in Visco's clothing.

It sounds like a wild and crazy time.  Gerry's Inner Beauty Parlor is from 6:30 to 9 PM at the Envoy Gallery at 131 Chrystie Street in Manhattan.  It's a great start to any Tuesday night!

Big Brother 9 winner Adam Jasinski arrested on on drug charges

BIG BROTHER

Everyone knows I'm hooked on the CBS reality show, "Big Brother"; so I love to hear what the winners are up to after the show.

It looks like "Big Brother 9" winner Adam Jasinski is back in the headlines.  Guess what Adam did with his $500,000 "Big Brother" winnings... he started his own street drug program.  Wait, what I mean to say is that he started selling oxycodone on the streets and got busted this weekend.

Adam "Baller" Jasinski is 31 years old and said he did public relations for an autism foundation but once referred to the children as "retards."

He sounds like a real winner.  Adam's drug scheme got busted when he tried to sell meds to an undercover government agent.

Get romantic tonight with a meteor shower

If you're looking for something romantic to do tonight, then grab your loved one (and a blanket) for what seems to be an amazing meteor shower.

The Earth will run into the debris left behind by Hailey's comet, and as we speed by it will all smash into our path like bugs on a windshield.  The meteor shower, however, will probably be much more beautiful than dead bugs going splat.

The best time to view the meteor shower, no matter where you are, is evidently between 1am and dawn.  The most optimal viewing may be around 6am on the West coast and 3am on the East.

Theatre Review: "Bye Bye Birdie"

by Jonathan Warman

Boy what a mess! I don’t know what Robert Longbottom did here, because this revival of Bye Bye Birdie seems very nearly un-directed. Let’s start with the casting: Gina Gershon is a talented actress and a gifted comedienne, as was very clear from her performance in last season’s Boeing Boeing. But her role here, Rose Alvarez, was written specifically for Chita Rivera, a formidable singer and dancer, and Gershon is formidable in neither capacity. Longbottom clearly hasn’t helped her to “sell” the numbers either, as Joe Mantello did so successfully in 9 to 5 earlier this year with non-singer Allison Janney.

Let’s move on to the visuals. The design does evoke the early sixties, but only in the most general way. The show’s story follows hip-swingin’ teen idol Conrad Birdie (Nolan Gerard Funk), who’s been drafted into the army.   Birdie's manager Albert (John Stamos) and Albert’s secretary Rosie (Gina Gershon) cook up a plan to send him off with one last kiss from a lucky teenage fan from Sweet Apple, Ohio.

Thing is, Sweet Apple looks nearly identical to Albert’s office in Manhattan. The most stark example: A Sweet Apple bar looks more like a brand new airport bar than a roadside house in small-town 1960 Ohio. The costumes have everything to do with color composition, but very nearly nothing to do with character. And the splashy glass panels that frame the stage make what should be a warm fuzzy show feel icy and lifeless.

Then there is the complete lack of consistency in the performance. Bill Irwin is hilarious as small-town dad Harry, but he seems to be in a completely different show (a more fun show to be sure). When Jane Houdyshell steps on-stage as Albert’s mother Mae, she wipes the stage with everybody else. It’s simply because she’s making strong choices and playing them with total conviction, not a common occurrence here. Funk plays Birdie with just as much confidence, plus a hint of raging libido underneath his pretty-boy exterior. Three strong performances, with not the slightest sense that Longbottom has put a second’s thought into what theatrical world would encompass all three.

There’s lot of talent here, but every time this Birdie hits a mark it feels like a happy accident.

Theatre Review: "Oleanna"

by Jonathan Warman

I liked Oleanna more than I thought would. That is, I didn’t like it that much, but I didn’t hate it. I’ve never been a big fan of David Mamet, but I have enjoyed his more recent comedic stage and film writing. Something of Oleanna’s vintage (1990s or earlier) didn’t seem likely to work for me.

So I was intrigued to find that Oleanna does dig just beyond the surface of political correctness. Instead of pitting formidable opponents against each other, Mamet portrays two egotists mired in mediocrity: John (Bill Pullman) a male university professor and Carol (Julia Stiles) one of his female students. What limited power and insight the play has, comes from their very mediocrity. Watching them vying for power with words they don’t fully grasp, in worlds inevitably out of their control, we get a very strong feel for the proverbial “banality of evil.”

In 2009, the debate over “political correctness,” the topic of Oleanna, isn’t as vexed as it was when the play was written. On the plus side, PC has contributed to heightened sensitivity to the realities of racism, sexism and homo- and trans-phobia. And the more heinously punitive uses of PC have, I hope, heightened our collective “bullshit meters” when encountering poisonous idiots like Mamet’s John and Carol.

This insight comes more from the perspective of time, however, and not from director Doug Hughes’s admittedly tight production.  Stiles has perhaps found the best angle for the least believable character, giving us a sense of violence and abuse in Carol’s background, which may inform her overblown reactions to John’s bumbling. Pullman’s John bumbles a little too much: this guy should be a little more of a stuffed shirt for the action of the play to make dramatic sense.

I liked this a lot more than last season’s American Buffalo and Speed-the-Plow. That’s not saying much, though—I really detested those two shows.

No more cross dressing at Morehouse college

LGBT NEWS

Atlanta' prestigious Morehouse College has made a bold move and banned cross-dressing on campus. They must have a horrible problem at this all male school, right?  Wrong.  It looks like a hand full of people are being targeted.

"We are talking about five students who are living a gay lifestyle that is leading them to dress a way we do not expect in Morehouse men," says Dr. William Bynum, vice president for Student Services.

Putting a stop to these five students who are experssing themselves in college has seemingly become top priority.

How the hell are they going to have drag shows if you can't cross dress?  I bet no one thought of that did they?

Big gay kiss tonight on "Gossip Girl"

MONDAY NIGHT ON TELEVISION

I have never watched an episode of "Gossip Girl" before, but tonight I might lose my virginity to the teeny bopper show with cruel intentions.  That's because one of the main characters, Chuck Bass (played by Ed Westwick), will engage in a gay kiss!

Don't get too excited.  It doesn't seem that Chuck Bass is on the "bi now gay later program."  As it turns out, Westwick's on-screen girlfriend Leighton Meester, divulges that her character, Blair Waldorf, could be behind it all.

"Well, I guess that I can tell you some things," she told MTV. "No, it's not tied into a threesome. I think all of this is just so everybody grabs their attention, and we're all in college now, so we can definitely push the limit with the sexuality, which is fine by me. I sort of make the kiss happen. I can tell you that much, and that's it."

"Gossip Girl" airs Mondays at 9/8c on the CW.

Theatre Review: "The Royal Family"

by Jonathan Warman

I’ve really been looking forward to The Royal Family, more than any other show at the Friedman Theatre since Manhattan Theatre Club reopened it (as the Biltmore) in 2003. It’s a classic by Georgre Kaufman and Edna Ferber, and Kaufman is one of my favorite comic playwrights of all time. Although it feels like director Doug Hughes has let a handful of sure-fire laughs get away from him and his cast, this production is nevertheless as solid and rewarding as anything MTC has done in years.

We are in the lavish Manhattan apartment of the Cavendishes, a famous family of stage stars, not so loosely based on the Barrymores. And what an apartment it is: Scenic designer John Lee Beatty delivers a magnificent jewel box of a set that could only belong to a truly histrionic family of actors.

The Cavendishes exchange scripts like other families trade glances, going through personal problems between matinees and evenings, trying to balance the need for love with the need for the stage, not always with success. The cast is uniformly wonderful, right down to downtown queer marvel David Greenspan in the small but plummy role of Jo the butler.

The wonderfulness starts at the top, with Rosemary Harris glowing as matriarch Fanny, definitely a creature breathing the air of the 19th century elegance and melodrama. Also terrific are John Glover and Ana Gasteyer as Herbert and Kitty Dean, the somewhat less successful relatives. And Reg Rogers is great fun as the clan’s swashbuckling Hollywood prodigal son.

But the play belongs to Julie Cavendish, the biggest star in the family. Comic stalwart Jan Maxwell finally gets to play a part worthy of her talent in a production that’s up to her standard. Maxwell locates both Julie’s deep, almost spiritual love of the stage and her longing for a more leisurely life, and plays them beautifully and effusively. Truly one of the more satisfying nights I’ve spent in a Broadway theatre in a while.

The Obama administration is set to release a report that basically tells the FBI to leave the folks on medical marijuana alone and to stop harassing people who are legally distributing weed for medical purposes if state allows it.

The memo evidently says that chasing legit weed smokers and their dealers is a waste of time.

This means that legit marijuana businesses running as a not-for-profit organizations should be left alone.  Others, like some of Los Angeles' candy shops, may still be subject to federal raids.

After the performance, Whitney seemed a bit out of it not even knowing when her record dropped.  that might, however, be poorly translated on TV.  Let's not start assuming she's back on the laced weed or nose candy... yet!

NYC Hot Spot Bungalow 8 has closed

Its true- Bungalow 8, the notorious NYC hotspot with a sign visible upon entry that reads: "no photos anywhere" has closed. It's been clear to everyone for a while that "bungalow" had drifted off to nightlife oblivion after being one of the most well watched rise and falls of NYC nightlife.

Maybe it was just another tired glitzy club, maybe it was it's "VIP only" image of you'll never get in, or maybe it's this "recession" thing I keep hearing about?

Regardless, Bungalow gave off a vibe not found in 1Oak,The Eldridge or Rosebar. I haven't been to The Gates or Boom Boom Room at Standard yet, but at Bungalow it wasn't about how much money you had to spend at your table; it was about who you were and who would be joining you.

One thing is for sure, no longer can we watch Paris Hilton cry when she is refused entry; and where can I buy vintage rock tees since I won't be doing it there early Thursday morning after we all used to go to marquee? I can only hope that something just as fabulous with maybe a little bit less of a "VIP only attitude" will open up in it's place. I guess we can always hit The Box until then.

New York City, the city that never sleeps seems to be taking a nap lately, and it's scary.

Theatre Review: "Superior Donuts"

by Jonathan Warman

Is Tracy Letts a “Great American Playwright” in the tradition of Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams? Or is he simply a playwright with a gift for engaging, entertaining characters who gives them just enough grit to make his plays seem weighty?

The truth probably lies somewhere in between, and we probably won’t actually know until he’s written a few more plays. His August: Osage County flirted with greatness enough to deserve the term “masterpiece,” putting him in a harsher spotlight than most playwrights ever have to face.

Superior Donuts artfully dodges the issue: it’s a comedy with more than a little sentimentality (but then again didn’t O’Neill write Ah Wilderness and Williams The Rose Tattoo). While things aren’t tidied up in a contrived way at the end, we can see the last few plot points coming (to Letts credit, the exact way they arrive is actually satisfying).

It is above all a very successful character sketch. Michael McKean plays Arthur, the owner of a Chicago donut shop who has cocooned himself away from the world. A Vietnam draft dodger, he suffers from the gnawing feeling that he’s a coward.  But a bright-eyed, very intelligent young black kid named Franco (Jon Michael Hill) asks Arthur for a job, beginning an unexpected friendship that will change both their lives in ways that neither expects.

McKean delivers a knockout performance, really getting under Arthur’s skin. If there’s anything great about Donuts it’s the lead role, and McKean should definitely get his share of nods come award time.

California judge takes a stab at Proposition 8, refused to dismiss lawsuit

LGBT NEWS

A California judge said he refuses to dismiss a lawsuit against Proposition 8, the ban on gay marriage.

U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker asked Charles Cooper, a lawyer for the group that sponsored Proposition 8, how allowing gay couples to wed threatens conventional unions.  The attorney said he did not know.

Cooper had asked Judge Walker to throw out the suit or make it more difficult for those civil rights claims to prevail.

The judge also made it very clear tht Cooper needs to present evidence showing that male-female marriages would be undermined if same-sex marriages were legal.

Theatre Review: "A Boy and His Soul"

by Jonathan Warman

Boy, do I feel Coleman Domingo! A Boy and His Soul is an autobiographical one-man show, but it escapes almost every single pitfall of that genre. Domingo views his own story through the life-giving lens of soul music (which I love very nearly as much as he does), imbuing that story with a glowing, rich texture and warmth.

We’re not talking just one genre of soul music, either, but the whole gamut of R&B music from Aretha to “quiet storm” to orchestral disco to synthesized funk. If any one style predominates, it’s Philly soul, created in Coleman’s hometown of Philadelphia. It’s almost as though the piece is more about the music, with his personal story as a subplot, a very refreshing angle.

Director Tony Kelly founded a theatre company in San Francisco called Thick Description, and the thickness of the details in A Boy and His Soul contribute mightily to the show’s appeal. Domingo paints very specific pictures with very specific soundtracks, which makes his stories crackle with vivid life and humor.

I really identify with the joy Domingo expresses as he thumbs through cartons of soul LPs, that rush of memory, of pure energy. A Boy and His Soul is also, in part, a coming out story, and Domingo’s use of Teddy Pendergrass’s “You Can’t Hide From Yourself” gives that story a touch of profundity even as “The Hustle” and “I’m Coming Out” bring out it’s campy highlights.

I’m a great believer in the power of music to tell stories that words can’t fully express, and of dance (or hell, any kind of movement) to add even more dimension.  A Boy and His Soul is packed so full of that power that it positively vibrates, making it one of the most deeply pleasurable experiences I’ve had in the theatre.

Cops catch second suspect in Queens gay bashing [video]

LGBT NEWS

Cops have finally captured the second suspect in a Queens gay bashing.  Daniel Rodriguez, Jr was picked up in Virginia after running from authorities.

Rodriguez and his friend, Daniel Aleman savagely attacked Jack Price.  Price, an openly gay man, was nearly killed.

Despite the fact that both Rodriguez and Aleman are being charged with a hate-crime, both men claim this was not a hate crime.

Rodriquez's father even begged for his foregiveness today.

"I want to say to Mr. price that I'm sorry for my son, and that he wasn't the one that caused him harm," Daniel Rodriguez, Sr., said. "I caused him the harm the minute I stopped being a father to my son. I hurt him."

Neighbors have accused Price of blowing kisses and provoking the attack.  Gay activists say nothing could have warranted such a brutal attack.

Obama responds to complaints that he's "done nothing" [video]

POLITICS

Barack Obama answered critics today in New Orleans who said the President hasn't done much since he's been in office.

"Now, just in case any of you were wondering, I never thought any of this was going to be easy," he said. "You know, I listen to sometimes these reporters on the news (who say) 'Well, why haven't you solved world hunger yet?'"

As the crowd laughed, he said: "Why hasn't everybody done it? It's been nine months. Why? I never said it was going to be easy. What did I say during the campaign? I said change is hard. And big change is harder."

Obama has even seen criticism from the folks over at "Saturday Night Live".

"When you look at my record, it's very clear what I've done so far, and that is: Nothing. Nada. Almost one year, and nothing to show for it," said Fred Arminsen who plays Obama on "SNL".

THURSDAY NIGHT ON TELEVISION

Tonight on a new episode of the "Real Housewives of Atlanta", Shereé only has 4 days until the "She by Shereé" fashion show so she invites her friend over to preview the samples. But when Shereé reveals that "sixth housewife" Dwight is helping to produce the show, the two get nervous that he might not be able to pull it all off with Shereé’s vision.

Meanwhile, Kim gets a surprise from her wig stylist when he comes over to prep her for an event.  This woman could make anything dramatic!

And NeNe is shocked when her uncle sets up an impromptu meeting with the man claiming to be her real dad. Will she be able to go through with the meeting?

Find out how it all ends up tonight on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" at 10/9c on Bravo.
