Ted Stevens loses Senate race in Alaska to Mark Begich
Share on Facebook
Ted Stevens is out! The longest serving Republican in the United States Senate has been defeated in Alaska. (It takes them a while to count votes up there).
Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (pictured above) is the Democrats 58th seat, and they only need 60 for a filibuster-free Senate.
Stevens was convicted of a felony, so he was likely to be ousted if he would have won. As you probably already know, Sarah Palin had her eyes on that seat.
There are still about 2,500 votes to be counted. After Tuesday's tally of just over 24,000 absentee and other ballots gave Begich 150,728 to 147,004 for Stevens. That means even if Senator Stevens got all of those 2,500 he couldn't catch Senator-elect Begich.
