New York Democrats battle for power of the Senate and gay marriage

After many decades of Republican rule, the Democrats have finally gained control of the New York State Senate. Now they need to pick one of their own to lead the pack, and that's where the problems come in.
Most Democrats have already reaffirmed their support for Malcolm A. Smith, the current Senate minority leader, but three Senators remain in the undecided category. They even say they might not pick a side until January.
Inside, it is all a political issue over gay marriage.
Led by hate-filled Senator Carl Kruger (pictured here); Senators Ruben Diaz Sr. and Pedro Espada Jr. are holding out. They want a Latino Democrat to lead the Senate who is more likely to help them stop same-sex marriage in New York.
If he can hold out until January, Kruger thinks he can get a referendum on the ballot to let New Yorkers vote on gay marriage before it can be passed as a bill through the Senate.
“We have agreed that gay marriage should be a referendum,” Mr. Diaz said. “Let the people decide.”
Ruben Diaz says he expects a Democrat to be in charge when the Senate opens in January; but came just short of threatening the possibility of voting for Dean G. Skelos, the current Senate majority leader and a Long Island Republican, saying Skelos hasn't taken his name "out of the running."
It's a shame that some politicians play so dirty! It's time for change!
