GaySocialites.com makes surprise endorsement for President

After months of weighing the options, GaySocialites.com is finally ready to endorse a candidate in the presidential race.

For the past few months, I have been trying to fairly report news from the campaign trail as an undecided voter. I hope to still be able to do that, but I think it is time that GaySocialites.com endorses a candidate for President and Vice-President.

Everyone probably knows that I'm a loyal Hillary Clinton supporter, and her influence helped my decision a lot. I wish I was writing this letter to endorse Senator Clinton for President, but since she isn't a choice that wouldn't make much sense.

After Hillary exited the race, both the Obama and McCain campaigns reached out to GaySocialites.com and me for our support. I am very thankful for that. It means a lot to me personally and truly shows how far the gay community has come. Who knew that both the Democrats and the Republicans would want a growing openly gay media outlet to endorse their bid for the White House?

After hearing both sides, I will say that both Obama and McCain make good cases for their platforms. There are issues I agree with both sides on, but there are fundamentals that make the decision clear.

In this election, for a gay person - there is only one choice no matter who you how you have voted in the past.

On behalf of GaySocialites.com, I encourage you to get behind the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden as we officially endorse their candidacy for President and Vice President.

John McCain and Sarah Palin have the potential to do so much damage to the gay rights movement from pushing anti-gay legislation to appointing conservative Supreme Court Justices. Sarah Palin is like a conservative fairy tale. I can't believe someone who is so closed-minded actually exists. She supports the idea that you can actually pray the gay away.

I liked the old John McCain, but I'm afraid that man is gone. He has flip flopped on all of the moderate issues he has supported in the past, and it is sad really. Palin basically anchors McCain too far to the right.

After the break, I'll tell you how the candidates weigh up on issues that I care about. You'll see why I decided to throw my support behind Obama/ Biden!

SOCIAL ISSUES/ GAY RIGHTS
My stance on what politicians consider "social issues" is probably what affects my decision in this election most.

What some consider "social issues" are the closest to my livelyhood. Gay rights issues are generally considered "social" while I consider them civil rights issues. I can't vote for a man or a woman who thinks that I'm gay by choice, therefore I shouldn't have the same rights of those who chose to be straight.

I'm a Christian. I believe in Christian values, but I don't believe in using God for political leverage. I support keeping church and state separated including politics.

Barack Obama may not support gay marriage, but Joe Biden has stood up gays. John McCain supports the National Defense of Marriage Act, and Sarah Palin believes with prayer that gays can become straight.

THE ECONOMY
John McCain has agreed that he isn't the best when it comes to the economy. Even though McCain is trying to compare himself to Ronald Reagan, Senator McCain's economic knowledge definitely doesn't measure up to Reagan's.

Barack Obama isn't an economic genius, and I realize that. Obama has presented a plan that seems promising and with the right advisors, I am confident Obama's hope for change can revive our lagging economy.

At least Obama has a plan. During the Republican National Convention, I don't recall hearing the term "middle-class" once.

Our economy has to improve so that we don't completely slip into a recession.

NATIONAL SECURITY
Living and working in lower Manhattan, national security is very important to me. While I may feel safer under John McCain's direction, I refuse to give up my rights in fear. I expect the Democratic Congress under the direction of Nancy Pelosi to stay on top of our national security.

THE WAR IN IRAQ
I am not against the intial war in Iraq. I think that George Bush misled the world about Iraq's capability to produce weapons of mass destruction. I do, however, think the world is a safer place without Sadam Hussein.

Our troops have been there long enough. I realize that the surge worked, but we can't keep surging. We have to start to get our troops out much more quickly.

It is for these reasons and more that I wholeheartedly pledge my support for Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden for President and Vice-President of the United States of America!
