San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and New York Governor David Paterson are planning a fundraiser to help defeat Proposition 8 in California.

The event will take place in Manhattan and will cost $5,000 per ticket.

Propositon 8 is a proposal to ban gay marriage in California even though the state's Supreme Court ruled a move unconstitutional.

Newsom and Paterson have both been long-time gay advocates. Mayor Newsom was the first to start marrying gay couples in California and Gov. Paterson ordered all NY state offices to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states.

has been a longtime supporter of marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. The New York Assembly last year passed a marriage equality bill, but it has stalled in the GOP-dominated Senate.
