Engineer in fatal Los Angeles train collision was gay

The engineer responsible for a Metrolink commuter train involved in a deadly head-on collision with a freight train outside of Los Angeles Friday was a gay man, according to reports.
Robert M. Sanchez, who died in the crash, failed to stop at a signal which reportedly caused the collision with the Union Pacific Freight train in which 25 people died and 135 were injured.
Sanchez evidently moved to California with his partner, Daniel Charles Burton, who committed suicide by hanging in 2003. Burton killed himself on Valentine's Day, and a coroner’s report showed that he was HIV-positive.
The engineer's series of misfortunes don't stop there. The Los Angeles Times is also reporting that Sanchez was busted for shoplifting after Burton's death at a Costco.
Investigators have ruled out the possibility of a train and track failure causing the crash and are about to rule out signal failure as a cause, which leaves them focusing on Sanchez and his typically long work day on the commuter train, which includes hours on break in the middle of the day during off-peak hours.
There have also been reports that Sanchez was text messaging at the time of the collission.
The Transportation Safety Board is also investigating a report that Sanchez was involved in a fatal crash with a pedestrian earlier this month.
