Gordon Brown is being criticized for endorsing Barack Obama despite the fact that he says he doesn't support Obama or John McCain.

In a magazine article, Brown said of Obama and his ticket, " [it is] the Democrats who are generating the ideas."

When news broke this week that the British Prime Minister could be endorsing a candidate for the White House, Brown denied the allegations.

"I have scrupulously met both Senator McCain and Senator Obama and talked to them both about the same issues that affect our two countries," he said. "I've got a great admiration for both of these very distinguished senators."

Writing in the Parliamentary Monitor, a political magazine with a limited circulation, Brown discussed proposals being put moderate and liberal parties around the world to deal with economic difficulties.

"Around the world it is progressive politicians who are grappling with these challenges," the Labour Party leader wrote, before citing the new Labor government in Australia and that of New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark.

"In the electrifying US presidential campaign, it is the Democrats who are generating the ideas to help people through more difficult times," the prime minister added.

"To help prevent people from losing their home, Barack Obama has proposed a Foreclosure Prevention Fund to increase emergency pre-foreclosure counselling, and help families facing repossession."

If Brown did endorse either candidate, it would be the first time in history that a British Prime Minister endorsed a U.S. candidate.
