A hospital in Memphis, Tennessee has confirmed that actor Morgan Freeman is in 'serious condition' following a car accident near his Ruleville, Mississippi home.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said Freeman was driving on a rural highway and flipped several times shortly before midnight Sunday.

Morgan was airlifted from the accident scene to the hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where he is being treated.

The car was a 1997 Nissan Maxima belonging to Demaris Meyer, who was in the passenger seat at the time of the accident.

"There's no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved," Williams said. He said both Freeman and Meyer were wearing seat belts. The woman's condition was not immediately available.

Freeman is being treated at the Regional Medical Center, an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis.
