Can Detriot Mayor Kwane Kilpatrick serve his term in jail?

Can the mayor continue to serve his term even if he's in jail? That's what the folks of Detroit are asking themselves today after Mayor Kwane Kilpatrick was ordered to jail.
Kilpatrick practically begged the judge to spare him on a bond violation for a July 23 trip to Windsor. The mayor even brought his sons to observe the case in hopes that the judge might see his respect for the system, but it didn't work.
"I respect this process more than I've respected any process in my life and I'm sorry," said Kilpatrick, who wore a gray suit.
"I did violate the conditions of this bond."
Kilpatrick said he violated court orders to complete a job for the city, but that doesn't seem to matter.
Despite the fact that Kwane Kilpatrick tried to demonstrate his love for Detroit, 36th District Judge Ronald Giles didn't buy it.
"That's what I have to do," Judge Giles said. "The court is revoking your bond, that all travel be suspended, and two, that you to be remanded to Wayne County Jail."
Mayor Kilpatrick will at least spend the night in jail while his attorney appeals.
Kilpatrick was indicted in March for lying under oath about an affair with his chief of staff and firing a police officer investigating reports of a wild party at the mayor's mansion.
What do you think? Should Detroit Mayor Kwane Kilpatrick resign from office?
