Florida Governor Charlie Crist got engaged to New York socialite Carol Rome over the weekend making it look more likely that he is vying for a spot along John McCain on the Republican ticket.

Crist is probably also hoping that his engagement will crush rumors that he is a closeted homosexual. We all know happens to gay governors (Jim McGreevey). Imagine if one made it to Washington.

A reporter asked Crist his reaction to some people's preoccupation with his sexuality, and sexual orientation. Charlie responded, "Well, you know, when you're in the public eye, and being governor of Florida that's inevitable, you know, I don't really focus on it, I'm just damn glad I found such a wonderful lady."

Local media is reporting that Governor Crist and Rome are planning a fall wedding, most likely a small ceremony in St. Petersburg. (Probably just before a certain election thus drumming up tons of free publicity for the GOP ticket. I'm just saying....)
