How does California's gay marriage ruling play into the Presidential election?

gaymarriageplatformissue.jpg

Gay marriage hasn't really been a major issue of this Presidential election, but it is only natural that Republicans wouldn't debate it in their primary nor would Democrats - since most candidates align with their parties on the issue.

Even though that the general election is on and gays are getting married in California, gay marriage may not even be an issue this year.

John McCain and Barack Obama seem to have taken the same stances on gay marriage this time around. Obama believes in civil unions and that it should be up to the states. The presumptive Democratic nominee has previously said he believes "same-sex couples should enjoy equal rights under the law."

McCain seems to just distance himself from the issue to make sure he doesn't piss off the conservative evangelical base of the Republican party who criticize him because of his past lack of support for a federal ban on same-sex marriage and other "liberal" offenses.

There have been a lot of gay marriage advances lately. Maybe we're better off when it isn't a platform issue!
