Ellen DeGeneres and her girlfriend Portia de Rossi are planning a wedding now that the California Supreme Court has legalized gay marriage in their state.

DeGeneres made the announcement during the taping of her talk show just after the Supreme Court verdict had been read. The show is scheduled to air on Friday.

Portia was in the audience when Ellen made the announcement and production staff say that the audience erupted with applause.

The California court ruling means same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. However, religious and social conservatives are seeking to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage.
