Is Dartmouth University getting more gay friendly?

dartmouthmoregayfriendly.jpg

A recent story posted on the Dartmouth University news website suggests that the school is getting more gay friendly, at least where the greek system is concerned.

In 1999, Metrosource Magazine declared Dartmouth a “Questionable School for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Students.” Later that same year, a student told The Dartmouth she believed the campus was “blatantly hostile” towards the GLBT community.

The campus news source says GLBT students they interviewed acknowledged that some acts of “blatant hostility” continue to arise on campus, but for the most part things are better.

Gays and Lesbians even say they find themselves partying up at Frat parties, something you wouldn't have thought of doing in the late 90's.

“We purposefully create our own space,” said Cody Lavender, co-chair of Gender, Sexuality, XYZ, formerly known as the Gay Straight Alliance. “Other than that, I wouldn’t go to Tri-Kap unless I knew there were going to be a lot of queer people there.”

Fraternities are making an effort to welcome everyone, representatives of Greek organizations told The Dartmouth.
