New plan offered in Michigan delegate debate
A new proposal is on the floor to seat Michigan's delegates at the Democratic National Convention. Representative Bart Stupak proposed on Monday that his state use a specific formula to allocate their delegates based on the January vote and the national primary vote at convention time.
In Stupak's plan, 83 delegates would be rewarded based on the January primary and the remaining pledged delegates and superdelegates would be based on the nationwide vote. That would leave 73 delegates up for grab after all of the states had weighed in.
The proposal has been sent to Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Under this proposed plan, Clinton would receive 47 delegates based on her vote total, while Obama would be awarded 36 delegates based on that "uncommitted" result; the rest would be divided according to the nationwide popular vote total after all the primaries are completed.
The Clinton campaign strongly advocated a re-vote in Michigan, but the state's legislature was unable to agree on a proposal before it adjourned earlier this month.
The Obama campaign has indicated support for equally dividing the state's delegates between the two candidates.
I just think we have to do whatever it takes to make sure that EVERY state gets to cast their vote at the convention.
