EQUALITY & SAME SEX MARRIAGES: Strange bedfellows?

When it comes to equality, this nation has had a long journey toward creating a “more perfect union.” Much of what is at stake in the same sex marriage issue is public equality and recognition, not simply a right to conduct secret liaisons undisturbed by the law.

Many invoke religion as the primary rationale why we should not legalize same sex marriage. It’s worth noting that early in our nation, the Puritans did not celebrate heterosexuality but rather marriage; they condemned all sexual expression outside the marriage bond and did not differentiate sharply between sodomy and heterosexual fornication. The world is changing and if we are to be a nation of liberty and justice for all, then we must hold true to that belief. There was a time in this nation when a white male could not marry a black female because of the grim ugly truth of racism. Have we not learned the lessons of the past? When will we call things for what they are? Just wrong! Do we let it continue to occur for years without a social remedy? Make no mistake about it, same sex marriages will come about in the USA. Countries like South Africa, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands and Spain already permit same sex marriages. Countless other countries will soon join them. Are we going to be the last to join the world chorus of equality while professing to be a nation of equals? Or do we still believe that “separate, but equal” is acceptable?
If we are unwilling to accept homosexual conduct as criminal, that declaration in and of itself is an invitation to lift the lifelong stigma created by the law in all realms, both in the public and in the private aspects of the lives of gay men and women. Hatred of our fellow Americans for political advantage is wrong, but silence is even graver. Anything less than marriage for same sex couples is the creation of a permanent underclass that cannot be reconciled with principles of equality in a government born on the premise of a secular order that affords the freedom to believe whatever religion one holds in one’s heart.
Moral disapproval is not enough in a nation that believes in equality under the law. No religious ceremony has ever been required to validate a state issued marriage license. So what is the actual rationale for denying it to same sex couples if not to serve a deep and scarring hardship on a very real segment of society for no rational reason? Those who argue “tradition” are protecting ‘traditional’ values by enshrining in the law invidious discrimination. No state in good conscious should ever deem a class of people strangers to the laws enjoyed by the majority when the law affords stability and happiness.
Advocates of the “ostrich” solution to this controversial social issue follow a blind philosophy of ignorance. It’s the same school of thought as those who failed to condemn racism early in our history. Our elected leaders, especially the Democrats who proclaim to be progressive leaders, will be remembered for how they vote on this question at the polls. But more importantly, they will be judged by history. Same sex marriage does more than just challenge the impact of principles of equality; it tests the possible limitations of their meaning.
A prime aspect of the history of our Constitution is the story of the extension of constitutional rights and protections to people once ignored or excluded by the law. I call upon the elected legislative representatives to continue in the great spirit of that principle and vote for same sex marriage. Remember that certain meanings and practices operate in furtherance of morally indefensible ends.
Rather than ask how same sex couples can be shielded from the exercise of state laws, ask how state power might be invoked to restructure the personal aspects of their lives in order to eliminate distorting stigmas associated with same sex couples living a loving, committed life. The Gospel According to Mimi: Sleeping with Straight Boys

It’s a myth that gay men often have about straight men, that there are very few who may actually be straight. Now, I’m going to run around proclaiming that heterosexuality doesn’t exist or that every man has the temptation to “get with the boys.” However, in a world where homoeroticism runs rampant in Abercrombie ads or in any number of Jackass stunts, I can’t blame the homo’s for thinking such. Still, in my experience I have had than more of my fair share of buckling down with the straight boys. There are two ways of which I could go about sleeping with straight boys The assumed easy way, is in drag, where I’d have more than my delightful share of “tranny chaser” straight boys. I decided to test my theory by placing an ad on Craigslist as a “Transgirl looking for straight boy for fun times” (the ad has since then been deleted) Now a usual ad on an internet hook-up or dating sight would garner anywhere from 5 to 25 responses. However, this time I got well over 160 responses from boys who wanted to have their way with a lady of my type. Now, I’m going to run around proclaiming that heterosexuality doesn’t exist or that every man has the temptation to “get with the boys.” However, in a world where homoeroticism runs rampant in Abercrombie ads or in any number of Jackass stunts, I can’t blame the homo’s for thinking such. Still, in my experience I have had than more of my fair share of buckling down with the straight boys. There are two ways of which I could go about sleeping with straight boys The assumed easy way, is in drag, where I’d have more than my delightful share of “tranny chaser” straight boys. I decided to test my theory by placing an ad on Craigslist as a “Transgirl looking for straight boy for fun times” (the ad has since then been deleted) Now a usual ad on an internet hook-up or dating sight would garner anywhere from 5 to 25 responses. However, this time I got well over 160 responses from boys who wanted to have their way with a lady of my type. I’ve talked about this concept of hetero boys who will stray with the “girls” with fellow drag darling Gusty Winds: New York‘s (and perhaps the world’s) number one b list drag queen. She had shared with me many of her exploits. Her technique to place an ad as a “Tranny MILF” (Mother I’d Like To Fuck) Now, I can’t claim that I’ve done that myself- but I checked up on non-tranny MILF ads- and there seem to be quite the large number of young men who want a night “with Stacy’s Mom’ regardless of the fact whether or not Stacy’s Mom is also Stacy’s Dad.
That aside, there are are an awful lot of straight boys roaming the clubs of New York who want a piece of tranny for a night of fun. It’s rather unusual. There is also an unusual amount of Arab men who are into the drag darlings. Ask any drag queen who takes a cab in New York- they’ll tell you that 9 out of 10 can drivers would get in your pants in exchange for a free cab ride. Sometimes its a bit much. One more than on occasion, I’ve felt uneasy and unsure about making it to my destination in one piece. It is not uncommon for these men to beg you for your phone number. Are Arab men so trapped in their heterosexual masculine power driven world that they lead a repressed life?

The state Supreme Court said on Wednesday afternoon that the State Legislature has six months to decide whether gay couples will be able to marry or participate in civil unions. Either way, the court determined that gay and lesbian couples should have the same exact rights as straight couples do no matter what title is given to the act.

Gay Man's Attackers Now Charged With Murder
Ian Michado Royer first told you about this story yesterday at GenerationQ.net, and today the charges against two of the men accused of driving a gay Brooklyn man onto a busy highway where he was struck and killed have been formally upgraded to murder.

The Club Crawlers: Grand Openings Edition!
This week the Club Crawlers have been hitting up club openings all over the city. Join them as they take us to the grand opening of Les Freques, the Closet, the Grand, Avalon with a few stops along the way!
We saved ourselves this week by waiting to start until Thursday night. This weekend was packed with Grand Openings, so we decided to plan ahead!
We started out on Thursday night in the East Village at Boysroom. This place has been struggling to stay alive since the Boysroom outlawed the 'boys.' We haven't been by there since Detention moved east, and we were pleasantly surprised. Drew Zailen and Jon-Jon Battles seem to be a good combo, and the dirt cheap drinks at the bar help too! if you're looking for a laid back place to chill and have a few drinks, this is your place. We must warn you though, there are more naked go-go boys than patrons at this point... but that's can't be a bad thing right? Seen: Drew Zailen, Jon-Jon Battles, Vlad, JR and more.
We decided to take a break from the twinks and pull up a bed at Duvet. We always have mixed emotions about this party. Several of our 'club crawlers' have previously called this place home on Thursday nights, but this week the place was a bit "hit or miss." We heard lots of talk from the promoters about their new Sunday party also opening this week, so we can't write this one off as a loss just yet. After enough laying around, we headed down the block to the Thursday night safe haven, Campus Thursdays at Splash. We're always really impressed with the crowd at Splash. The go-go boys are bit too young for our taste, but they are definitely the nicest group of boys we've ever watched in thongs. You very rarely find 'exotic dancers' with a lot of personality, but the Campus dancers definitely have both! Both floors at Splash were banging tonight. Seth Gold and Steve Sidewalk seem to comprise a perfect combo for non-stop dancing. The drinks aren't too bad either

We dedicated our Friday night to the Grand Opening of the Grand on 53rd street for the launch party for Nick Lachey's new networking site, yfly.com. The straight girls got so testy when the door man moved the fags to the front of the line, but shit happens doesn't it girls. Once inside we were mesmerized by the hot decor inside the club and the whole clan of not-so-celebrities. What we learned from this trip, Nick Lachey doesn't have very many friends. Seen: Nick himself, Vanessa Millano, Drew Lachey, Dylan McDermott, Charles Winters and more.
This Saturday, we started uptown and headed downtown (normally, we do the opposite). We went to Hell's Kitchen this week and got our start at Therapy. The atmosphere here just screams, "sit here and get drunk." Two out of five of our crew were completely drunk before we even left, and the others were off to a good start. If you still haven't made it up to Therapy, its a good place to snuggle in the chilly weather. Check it out. Next we headed to Chelsea to check out the floor at Roxy. We shortly realized that we were a bit too early for the Chelsea boy crowd that frequents this mega dance floor so we hit up the open bar (or at least we think it was open, we didn't pay a dime!) As the guys started to flood in, we hit the floor and jammed a bit after turning down multiple offers to "see stars." We stumbled across town to see what the twinks at Heaven were up to after getting lost between 16th and 19th streets (as impossible as it might sound.) After re-gaining consciousness, we stopped in at Heaven (now under new management) to say hello to some old friends. Steve Sidewalk was joined by DJ Tek E providing everything from pop to hard house. We ran into our old friend, Gina, the former Stonewall manager who is now running the show at Heaven now. We remember seeing her, but were to drunk to remember what was said. Sorry Gina, we still love you! We're always shocked by what Charles Winters and Mimi Imfurst pull off on the stage, but this week it seemed to a be a "who is the drunkest" contest. (Charles is our boss here at gaysocialites, so we have to choose what we say carefully lol!) Someone was wearing a kilt, we have this much confirmed. We're still just not sure who though. At first we thought Charles was in a skirt, but he says we were just too drunk to remember. We can't really argue that. The show was still going on when we left, but strangely enough we ran into one of the hotttttt contestants while on the train back to Brooklyn. We've never gotten started at that early before, but we were definitely impressed with the potential this place has to become the new "pre-game" hot spot rather quickly. Our card was full for the evening, so we hit the road after molesting the open bar and enjoying a fish bowl each. By the way, the fish bowls are SOOOO much stronger than they taste... we're just warning you. After a very strange ride across town, our cabby let us off 3 blocks away from Guesthouse to avoid "the dangerous situation on 27th street." We had to dig for info, but the driver warned us of riots and a lot of "police activity". We hauled ass up the block to catch the action, but upon arrival we wondered if maybe 27th street had moved... the only danger on this 27th street were the three drunk fags about to fall all over the place trying to figure out how to get into Guesthouse (that's us). Where in the world did he get all this talk of riots? This isn't Saturday night, and we aren't straight! After getting into Guesthouse and dropping half our purse on drinks, we realized we needed to grab some more make-up and try Les Freques again another time. Avalon or bust! We arrived at Avalon, avoided the small line and headed straight for the dance floor. Vito Fun was burning up the chapel with his 80's tunes while Seth Gold (we think) was banging the bass on the main floor. You could tell that the Chelsea boys were happy to be back church to get their God on. The train ride back to BK was miserable this morning, now we get ready for work. After getting into Guesthouse and dropping half our purse on drinks, we realized we needed to grab some more make-up and try Les Freques again another time. Avalon or bust! We arrived at Avalon, avoided the small line and headed straight for the dance floor. Vito Fun was burning up the chapel with his 80's tunes while Seth Gold (we think) was banging the bass on the main floor. You could tell that the Chelsea boys were happy to be back church to get their God on. The train ride back to BK was miserable this morning, now we get ready for work. The Club Crawlers: Grand Openings Edition!
This week the Club Crawlers have been hitting up club openings all over the city. Join them as they take us to the grand opening of Les Freques, the Closet, the Grand, Avalon with a few stops along the way!
We saved ourselves this week by waiting to start until Thursday night. This weekend was packed with Grand Openings, so we decided to plan ahead!
We started out on Thursday night in the East Village at Boysroom. This place has been struggling to stay alive since the Boysroom outlawed the 'boys.' We haven't been by there since Detention moved east, and we were pleasantly surprised. Drew Zailen and Jon-Jon Battles seem to be a good combo, and the dirt cheap drinks at the bar help too! if you're looking for a laid back place to chill and have a few drinks, this is your place. We must warn you though, there are more naked go-go boys than patrons at this point... but that's can't be a bad thing right? Seen: Drew Zailen, Jon-Jon Battles, Vlad, JR and more.
We decided to take a break from the twinks and pull up a bed at Duvet. We always have mixed emotions about this party. Several of our 'club crawlers' have previously called this place home on Thursday nights, but this week the place was a bit "hit or miss." We heard lots of talk from the promoters about their new Sunday party also opening this week, so we can't write this one off as a loss just yet. After enough laying around, we headed down the block to the Thursday night safe haven, Campus Thursdays at Splash. We're always really impressed with the crowd at Splash. The go-go boys are bit too young for our taste, but they are definitely the nicest group of boys we've ever watched in thongs. You very rarely find 'exotic dancers' with a lot of personality, but the Campus dancers definitely have both! Both floors at Splash were banging tonight. Seth Gold and Steve Sidewalk seem to comprise a perfect combo for non-stop dancing. The drinks aren't too bad either ! We dedicated our Friday night to the Grand Opening of the Grand on 53rd street for the launch party for Nick Lachey's new networking site, yfly.com. The straight girls got so testy when the door man moved the fags to the front of the line, but shit happens doesn't it girls. Once inside we were mesmerized by the hot decor inside the club and the whole clan of not-so-celebrities. What we learned from this trip, Nick Lachey doesn't have very many friends. Seen: Nick himself, Vanessa Millano, Drew Lachey, Dylan McDermott, Charles Winters and more.
This Saturday, we started uptown and headed downtown (normally, we do the opposite). We went to Hell's Kitchen this week and got our start at Therapy. The atmosphere here just screams, "sit here and get drunk." Two out of five of our crew were completely drunk before we even left, and the others were off to a good start. If you still haven't made it up to Therapy, its a good place to snuggle in the chilly weather. Check it out. Next we headed to Chelsea to check out the floor at Roxy. We shortly realized that we were a bit too early for the Chelsea boy crowd that frequents this mega dance floor so we hit up the open bar (or at least we think it was open, we didn't pay a dime!) As the guys started to flood in, we hit the floor and jammed a bit after turning down multiple offers to "see stars." We stumbled across town to see what the twinks at Heaven were up to after getting lost between 16th and 19th streets (as impossible as it might sound.) After re-gaining consciousness, we stopped in at Heaven (now under new management) to say hello to some old friends. Steve Sidewalk was joined by DJ Tek E providing everything from pop to hard house. We ran into our old friend, Gina, the former Stonewall manager who is now running the show at Heaven now. We remember seeing her, but were to drunk to remember what was said. Sorry Gina, we still love you! We're always shocked by what Charles Winters and Mimi Imfurst pull off on the stage, but this week it seemed to a be a "who is the drunkest" contest. (Charles is our boss here at gaysocialites, so we have to choose what we say carefully lol!) Someone was wearing a kilt, we have this much confirmed. We're still just not sure who though. At first we thought Charles was in a skirt, but he says we were just too drunk to remember. We can't really argue that. The show was still going on when we left, but strangely enough we ran into one of the hotttttt contestants while on the train back to Brooklyn. Sunday was the big night of grand openings, we started at the Grand Opening of the Closet by GaySocialites.com with open bar from 8-9pm. We found hot boys, crazy music, unhibited bartenders, shitty food, strong drinks and one of the strangest clubs we've ever seen. We've never gotten started at that early before, but we were definitely impressed with the potential this place has to become the new "pre-game" hot spot rather quickly. Our card was full for the evening, so we hit the road after molesting the open bar and enjoying a fish bowl each. By the way, the fish bowls are SOOOO much stronger than they taste... we're just warning you.
